Frequently
Asked Questions
Q: I am having trouble seeing the artwork in the Design Viewer page. Why can't I see the entire page?
A: The Design Viewer page is actually two window panes. The top window pane shows all the artwork available for engraving. The bottom window pane shows a large view of the selected design from above, for more detail. The horizontal bar between them can be adjusted. To adjust the window panes, move the mouse pointer over the horizontal bar until the pointer changes to a double-arrow pointing up and down. You can then left-click on the bar and, while holding down the left mouse button, drag the bar up or down to adjust the window sizes. There are also scrollbars that will allow you to move the window contents.
Q: What kind of picture do I need for photo engraving?
A: The main points to consider for photo engraving are the size of the image, the overall quality and clarity, and the subject and background contrast. The image should be at least the same size as the image you would like engraved at 300 dpi. The quality and clarity is the most important. If your picture is blurred or otherwise distorted it will directly affect the engraving quality. A poor quality image cannot be fixed. Although many graphic programs come with tools ( filters ) such as, sharpen, de-speckle, edge enhance, photo enhance, etc., using these filters may make a image look better on your monitor screen but, it will distort the image. If you are processing your own digital camera or scanned images we encourage you to NOT use any filters. Also, do not use any file compression when saving your digital images. The more you compress a digital image file the smaller the file size gets and the worse the image quality. Photographs with a lot of gradual light to dark shading often produce very attractive engraved images on black marble. Photographs with large dark and light areas with little or no gradual shading may result in a "blocky" appearance and finer details of the picture will be lost when engraved. Most pictures that have a dark background do not engrave well. This is usually true because if the background is dark, the subject of the picture will also be dark.
The best thing to do if you have taken the photograph with a digital camera, is to just send the picture the way it came out of the camera. If you want to crop an area of the image, make sure to save it with the highest resolution possible and no compression. If you are scanning a photograph, scan it at 300 to 600 dpi.
Q: How do I send my picture to you for photo engraving?
A: After placing an order for an item with a photograph, you will receive an email confirmation including the order number and details of your engraving. Simply reply to that email and attach the image you would like to have engraved. This will insure the image is linked to your specific order. If you have a photograph that is not in a digital format, there are thousands of photo processing centers located in major retail stores throughout the country. Most are able to scan a paper print for you and either place it on a CD or other media such as a memory card. In the event that you are unable to have your paper photograph scanned and you are willing to send us your photograph, we will be happy to scan it for you at no additional cost. We will take special care to treat your photograph as our own and return it to you with your order. However, we cannot be responsible for the photograph while in transit with the carrier.
